ROAD ACCIDENT FUND ACT, 1996 (ACT No. 56 of 1996)

PUBLICATION OF LIST OF NOMINEES FOR BOARD OF ROAD ACCIDENT FUND

I, Abdulah Mohamed Omar, Minister of Transport, hereby in terms of section 10(9)(a)(ii) of the Road Accident Fund Act, 1996, publish the names of the persons who have been nominated for appointment to the Board of the Road Accident Fund in response to my call for such nominations In the Government Gazette of 2 July 1999.

The Road Accident Fund is a national public entity established for the purpose of paying compensation - in accordance with the provisions of the Road Accident Fund Act, 1996 - for loss or damage wrongfully caused by the driving of motor vehicles within the Republic.

The Fund has a Board, whose function it is to exercise overall authority and control over the financial position, operation and management of the Fund. The Board serves for a period of three years. A new Board presently has to be constituted.

In terms of the Act, I am required to appoint at least eleven, but not more than twelve persons to hold office as members of the Board. Those members of the Board:

• may not be in the full-time employment of any government; and
• should not have any direct or indirect interest in the statutory functions, duties and obligations of the Fund.

They must:

• each command extensive experience in one or more of the fields of insurance, finance, medical service provision, law, accounting and actuarial science, or in matters relating to disabled persons, road users, commuters' or consumers' interests; and
• at all times act in the best interest of the Fund.

The persons whose names are listed in the Schedule herebelow have been duly nominated for appointment to the Board of the Fund. I shall now establish a selection committee to hold interviews in public with the nominees, and to make recommendations to me thereafter. I shall take those recommendations into account when deciding on the appointments to be made.

Any person who wants to object to any of the nominations, may on or before 8 October 1999 do so in writing to:
