SOUTH AFRICAN QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY (SAQA)

PUBLIC NOTICE BY NSB 04 COMMUNICATION AND
LANGUAGE STUDIES OF AN APPLICATION TO REGISTER
AN SGB FOR SOUTH AFRICAN SIGN LANGUAGE AND SOUTH
AFRICAN SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETING

NSB 04 has received an application to recognise and register an SGB for South African Sign Language and South African Sign Language Interpreting.

PROPOSED BRIEF OF THE SGB

  1. Develop learning pathways for potential qualifications and unit standards in the sub-fields Language and Communication Studies from level 1 through to levy 6 [Regulation 24 (1) (e)]..

  2. Generate (a) South African Sign Language (SASL) (b) SASL Interpreting qualifications and unit standards in the sub-fields, in accordance with Authority requirements, for NQF levels 1 to 6, in the following areas: The nature of sign language; Vocabulary; Fingerspelling; Lexical diversity and syntactic unity; SASL; The study of SASL on a phonological, morphological and syntactical level; History of sign language internationally and nationally; History of deaf education internationally and nationally; Aspects of deaf culture; Deaf literature from the 18th century to date; Legal status of SASL; SASL research; and SASL learning methodologies. SASL Interpreting will include translation theories; ethics; language enhancement; cross-cultural communication; cultural awareness; discourse analysis; dialogue and group interpreting; role and presentation as an interprets; various community settings of interpreting (e.g., the clinic or indaba); various highly specialised settings of interpreting, (e.g., a medical or linguistic congress, educational interpreting, interpreting within courts, etc.).

  3. Recommend qualifications and standards generated under 2, above, to the NSB [Regulation 24 (1) (a)].

  4. Recommend criteria for the registration of assessors and moderators or moderating bodies [Regulation 24 (1) (d)].
