ELECTORAL COMMISSION

NOTICE 2804 OF 1998

DETERMINATION OF SEATS FOR THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE

The Electoral Commission hereby gives notice that -

  1. In terms of sections 46(2) and 105(2) of the Constitution, read with section 114 of, and Schedule 3 to, the Electoral Act, 1998 (Act No. 73 of 1998), the Electoral Commission must determine the number of members of the National Assembly and of each provincial legislature.
  2. In terms of Item I of Schedule 3 to the Electoral Act, 1998, the Electoral Commission must determine the number of seats of the National Assembly and each of the provincial legislatures according to a formula specified in the item, taking into account available scientifically based data and representations by interested parties.
  3. Statistics South Africa has determined the population figures for the various provinces as follows:

  4. Interested parties are invited to make proposals with regard to the scientifically based data to be taken into account by the Electoral Commission, such proposals to reach the Electoral Commission at the address stated below not later than 31 December 1998.
  5. After consideration of such proposals, notice will be given in the Government Gazette of the time, date, venue and procedure for a public hearing at which interested parties will be afforded an opportunity to make representations before the determinations are made.
