PRIVATE ACT

To amend the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, (Private) Act, 1959.

Preamble.—WHEREAS the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, (Private)
Act, 1921 (Act No. 15 of 1921), was amended and consolidated by the University
of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, (Private) Act, 1959 (Act No. 15 of 1959)
(hereinafter referred to as the principal Act), and the principal Act was
amended by the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, (Private)
Amendment Act, 1968 (Act No. 32 of 1968), the University of the Witwatersrand
Johannesburg, (Private) Amendment Act, 1980 (Act No. 37 of 1980), the
Universities Amendment Act, 1983 (Act No. 83 of 1983), the Universities,
National Education Policy and Technikons Amendment Act, 1984 (Act No. 75 of
1984), the Universities Amendment Act (House of Assembly), 1989 (Act No. 64 of
1989), and the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, (Private)
Amendment Act (House of Assembly), 1991 (Act No. 78 of 1991);

AND WHEREAS for the better administration and conduct of the University it is
expedient to further amend the principal Act so as to—

(a)	provide a less cumbersome procedure for establishing committees of the
Council;

(b)	clarify that such committees need not consist exclusively of members of the
Council;

(c)	remove the framing, making or approval of rules from the powers or functions
of the Council that may not be delegated;

(d)	delete paragraph (b) of section 11 (1), which provides that the Council
shall not delegate any of its powers or functions to a committee the membership
of which includes persons other than members of the Council; and

(e)	provide a less cumbersome procedure for establishing committees of the
Senate:

1.   Substitutes section 11 of the University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg, (Private) Act, No. 15 of 1959.

2.   Short title.—This Act shall be called the University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg, (Private) Amendment Act (House of Assembly), 1993.
