SOCIAL WORK AMENDMENT ACT NO. 22 OF 1993

ACT

To amend the Social Work Act, 1978, so as to effect certain textual alterations;
to do away with the requirement that the form of a certificate of registration
be prescribed; to provide for the conducting of certain examinations by the
South African Council for Social Work; to provide for an additional penalty and
for admissions of guilt in respect of unprofessional or improper conduct; and to
further regulate the matters in respect of which the Minister of National Health
may make regulations; and to provide for matters incidental thereto.

1.   Amends section 1 of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978, by substituting
the definition of “student social worker”.

2.   Substitutes the heading to Chapter I of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of
1978.

3.   Amends section 3 of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978, by substituting
paragraph (d).

4.   Amends section 11 (4) (a) of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978, by
substituting the expression “Department of National Health and Population
Development” for the expression “Department of Health and Welfare”.

5.   Substitutes the heading to Chapter II of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of
1978.

6.   Amends section 15 of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978, as follows:—
paragraph (a) substitutes the word “especially” for the word “specially” in
subsection (3) (b); and paragraph (b) substitutes the word “especially” for the
word “specially” in subsection (4).

7.   Substitutes section 16 of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978.

8.   Amends section 17 (2) of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978, by
substituting paragraph (a).

9.   Amends section 17B of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978, as follows:—
paragraph (a) substitutes the word “education” for the word “tuition” in
subsection (1); and paragraph (b) deletes subsection (3).

10.   Amends section 17C of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978, by inserting
subsection (2A).

11.   Inserts section 17D in the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978.

12.   Amends section 18 of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978, by adding
subsection (4).

13.   Amends section 22 of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978, as follows:—
paragraph (a) adds the word “or” at the end of subsection (1) (c) and adds
subsection (1) (d); paragraph (b) substitutes the word “postponed” for the word
“suspended” wherever it occurs in subsection (1A) (b) (ii); paragraph (c)
substitutes subsection (2) (b); and paragraph (d) adds subsections (6), (7) and
(8).

14.   Amends section 28 of the Social Work Act, No. 110 of 1978, as follows:—
paragraph (a) substitutes subsection (1) (c); paragraph (b) substitutes
subsection (1) (e); paragraph (c) inserts subsection (1) (gC); and paragraph (d)
substitutes subsection (3).

15.   Short title.—This Act shall be called the Social Work Amendment Act, 1993.
