Columbus Stainless, founded in 1966, is South Africa’s and Africa’s only producer of stainless steel flat products. Over the past 5 decades we believe that our contribution to the South African market has impacted positively on the GDP of the country and helped to create the most needed jobs. Our team make it happen through our committed distributor network and our direct customers. We are also proud to have one of the safest manufacturing working environments in the country. Our plant in its current form was expanded during the dawn of our democracy and commissioned in 1995. The official opening was graced by the presence of Tata Nelson Mandela. The past 25 years have been challenging as well as rewarding. We have seen an exponential growth of the local stainless steel market from 90k tons in 2009 to 120k tons in 2019. The growth can be ascribed to big projects towards 2010 soccer world cup, booming commodity markets and finding new stainless steel applications.

South African companies are struggling to get past the initial cost of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) compliance, and to fully recognise the advantages of diverse, inclusive organisations. Eaton South Africa believes that true transformation yields long-term benefits. In business, a diverse workforce yields huge benefits, if managed correctly. Rather than just employing people for the sake of quotas, a company needs to do thorough introspection to define its own approach to ...

Somehow and at some stage, all of us gained and lost and gained again, but we at Eickhoff like to think that on average over the past 25 years we all gained while growing a new South Africa, a sunshine nation. “We are a resilient nation” I often hear. “Nothing is impossible” are words shared on many occasions, around the board room table, in management meetings, and of course around the braai.

Since the dawn of democracy, there has been positive change in our country, particularly in the business sector. However, there is more that still needs to be done to harvest the fruits of a democratic nation. While structures have been put in place to help us improve the status of our economy, the narrative of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) is key to sustainable socio-economic development. Transformation is key for how businesses in South Africa should operate. It goes beyond compliance; it should be driven by the mantra of ubuntu and responsible corporate citizenship. With this in mind, Metso embarked on a transformational journey three years ago to improve our Level 8 B-BBEE status.

The people of South Africa were tested and had to fight for their freedom, while overcoming numerous obstacles. The beauty of our past is that the people of this wonderful country have prevailed and won the fight. Over the years the struggle took a massive toll, but South Africans persisted. This dedication to the cause of freedom as well as continuous persistence gave birth to a beautiful future. Over the last 25 years people realised that the fight is not over and while the future brings its own challenges and obstacles, the people will once again prevail. Together we will overcome our challenges and stand together to build a prosperous future for all in South Africa.

Reflecting on our business over 25 years, we have gone through a period of rejuvenation to create a vibrant and forward-thinking environment that keeps us at the forefront of our industry. Critical thinking, innovation and change are a constant. Everything we do works in perfect synergy towards one vision: expanding a world-class portfolio of exhibitions to the benefit of all our stakeholders. In his address at the Freedom Day celebrations in 1995, Nelson Mandela spoke of the need for everyone to work together to produce efficiently and compete with the best in the world, to achieve equity and help create more jobs. Opening Electra Mining Africa in 1996, he said that it was one of the most significant exhibitions in South Africa. An understanding that exhibitions bring people together from many industry sectors to establish trade partnerships, find solutions that lead to business growth, and to keep abreast of latest technology and trends to ensure efficiency and global competiveness.
