On 16 June 1976, thousands of Soweto's schoolchildren took to the streets and changed South Africa forever. Fifty years on, their courage is still present in conversations about justice, dignity and the right to be free. Every day for 16 days, to commemorate the Soweto Uprising, we’ll spotlight a book that speaks to the power of protest and solidarity. Read about the intellectual fire of Black Consciousness, the teachers and students who refused to be silenced, the communities and workers that organised and resisted and the individuals whose bravery shaped a nation. Social justice is everyone’s concern. Holding power to account, something everyone can do. Click here to pre-order the books

Who counts as an intellectual? In many traditions, the figure of the intellectual is tied to the search for truth, social critique and public engagement. From the Dreyfus Affair (a political scandal in 1894 in France that mobilised writers and thinkers to defend justice) to postcolonial debates, intellectuals are those who intervene in society, not just to interpret the world, but to challenge it. In the African context, this role takes on particular urgency. Intellectuals on the continent and in the diaspora have long navigated a complex terrain shaped by colonial legacies, political constraints and global inequalities. They are not simply producers of knowledge. They are mediators between worlds, engaged in a struggle over meaning, identity and historical narrative.

Today marks 33 years since the assassination of Chris Hani – one of the most iconic and steadfast figures in South Africa’s struggle for freedom, a man whose life was defined by courage, conviction and an unwavering belief in a just South Africa. His assassination on 10 April 1993 sent shockwaves through a nation on the brink of democracy, threatening to unravel the fragile negotiations of the time. This short biography offers a powerful glimpse into Hani’s life in exile, his role within Umkhonto we Sizwe, and his influence during the critical political transitions of the early 1990s. Written by distinguished historian Hugh Macmillan who encountered him in Lusaka, it captures both the public figure and the man behind the movement. Purchase your copy of Chris Hani: A Jacana Pocket Biography at a special R50 off until Monday, 13 April.

Drawing on diverse research and case studies, the book reframes African cities not just as sites of challenge, but as places of innovation, resilience and opportunity.
