Hill-Lewis demands strict timelines for new phase of government-business economic alliance

DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s commitment to drive South Africa's economic growth beyond 3% through the newly launched phase of the Government-Business Partnership but warned that the scale of the country's economic crisis demands immediate, aggressive action rather than slow, marginal changes. South Africa's unemployment rate currently sits at 33.6% and as a result, Hill-Lewis stressed that the country needs more than incremental reform. Mining, agriculture, tourism and infrastructure have been selected under Phase 3 of the Government-Business Partnership to raise South Africa’s growth to 3% and to create one-million new jobs by 2030. As a key partner in the Government of National Unity, Hill-Lewis said the DA intends to use its executive leverage to enforce strict timelines on State promises.

So far, 205 health and nutrition facilities have closed after unprecedented cuts to humanitarian aid, the United Nations children's agency said in comments delivered via video call by its spokesperson James Elder. As many as 618 health facilities could close nationwide, he said. “Fewer facilities mean longer journeys for mums and their babies; longer journeys mean later treatment; later treatment means more severe illness and a greater risk of preventable death," Elder said.

The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption has formally withdrawn all corruption charges against the Divisional Commissioner of Crime Intelligence Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, and six other high-ranking police officials. The legal turnaround follows a direct intervention by National Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Andy Mothibi. The NPA said the decision was triggered by “emerging, undisputed evidence of serious irregularities” in how the State handled the high-profile case. The withdrawal vindicates a significant portion of the South African Police Service Crime Intelligence top brass. Mothibi invoked Section 179(5)(c) of the Constitution, read alongside Section 22(2)(b) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Act.

A coalition of South African civil society organisations has launched an urgent appeal to Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe and Petroleum Agency South Africa CEO Dr Bongani Sayidini, demanding the immediate rejection of a proposed ownership transfer of Block 1 in the Orange basin to Israeli company Navitas Petroleum. Block 1 is a 19 929 km² offshore oil and gas exploration block located on the South Africa-Namibia maritime border in the Orange basin and the coalition warns that approving the ownership deal would make South Africa complicit in supporting the Israeli State, directly violating international legal obligations and domestic constitutional duties. The organisations stressed South Africa’s strong historical support for the Palestinian struggle for self-determination as they argued that the government has a binding duty to prevent complicity in genocide, apartheid, and illegal occupation.

Zambian police have summoned opposition leader Brian Mundubile for questioning over alleged national security threats in the latest escalation of a post-election dispute that analysts say may tarnish the country's democratic reputation. The August 13 poll was widely expected to result in a smooth re-election for President Hakainde Hichilema, who took power in 2021 in the mineral-rich Southern African nation. Hichilema won 60% of votes, according to the electoral commission. But the opposition put in an unexpectedly strong showing, and in the days that followed opposition figures were arrested amid allegations of vote-rigging. Two reports by independent observers found indications that Hichilema's vote count was inflated, but that he would have won anyway. Hichilema denies any fraud.

Ramaphosa hosted Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday, when he stated that to facilitate the smooth movement of citizens and commercial goods, both nations must modernise their infrastructure and border management systems. Speaking on a video call from the northeastern Congolese city of Bunia, Harneis called for more aid, saying an existing pool of funds is set to run out within weeks. Health workers there were coming under attack by locals angered and terrified by the outbreak, and were themselves falling sick and dying from the disease, he added. Congo's 17th Ebola epidemic became the biggest in the country's history in terms of the number of cases in late July, surpassing the previous worst outbreak in 2018 to 2020.
