Nearly 1.9-million children in Somalia are expected to be malnourished this year, with the country seeing a 32% jump in the number of children admitted to facilities with severe acute malnutrition and complications, UNICEF said on Friday. So far, 205 health and nutrition facilities have closed after unprecedented cuts to humanitarian aid, the United Nations children's agency said in comments delivered via video call by its spokesperson James Elder. As many as 618 health facilities could close nationwide, he said. “Fewer facilities mean longer journeys for mums and their babies; longer journeys mean later treatment; later treatment means more severe illness and a greater risk of preventable death," Elder said.

Zambian police have summoned opposition leader Brian Mundubile for questioning over alleged national security threats in the latest escalation of a post-election dispute that analysts say may tarnish the country's democratic reputation. The August 13 poll was widely expected to result in a smooth re-election for President Hakainde Hichilema, who took power in 2021 in the mineral-rich Southern African nation. Hichilema won 60% of votes, according to the electoral commission. But the opposition put in an unexpectedly strong showing, and in the days that followed opposition figures were arrested amid allegations of vote-rigging. Two reports by independent observers found indications that Hichilema's vote count was inflated, but that he would have won anyway. Hichilema denies any fraud.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for deeper bilateral cooperation between South Africa and Zimbabwe, urging both nations to modernise respective border systems, tackle trans-border crime, and correct a “massive” trade imbalance. Speaking at the fourth session of the South Africa–Zimbabwe Bi-National Commission at the OR Tambo Building in Pretoria, Ramaphosa emphasised regional prosperity for neighbours with “vast shared potential, seamless migration and robust economic collaboration”. Ramaphosa hosted Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday, when he stated that to facilitate the smooth movement of citizens and commercial goods, both nations must modernise their infrastructure and border management systems. He stressed that infrastructure upgrades must be paired with stricter security enforcement.

More than 2 500 people have now died in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak, which is spreading exponentially in an area larger than France, senior United Nations Ebola coordinator Julien Harneis said on Friday. Speaking on a video call from the northeastern Congolese city of Bunia, Harneis called for more aid, saying an existing pool of funds is set to run out within weeks. Health workers there were coming under attack by locals angered and terrified by the outbreak, and were themselves falling sick and dying from the disease, he added. Congo's 17th Ebola epidemic became the biggest in the country's history in terms of the number of cases in late July, surpassing the previous worst outbreak in 2018 to 2020.

People deported by the US to Liberia will mostly hail from Latin American countries including Cuba and Venezuela, Liberia's information minister told Reuters, as authorities prepared to receive the first deportation flight on Thursday. The West African nation announced on Tuesday that it had agreed to accept up to 1 200 third-country deportees from the US in the next 12 months, the latest of several deals the Trump administration has implemented on the continent to accelerate removals. A government statement on Tuesday said the deportees would come from "African and Western Hemisphere countries", without specifying, while the State Department did not provide details on nationalities. Liberia's information minister, Jerolinmek Piah, told Reuters that "most of the people are from Latin American countries. Some from Venezuela, Cuba, Colombia and others."

The Democratic Republic of Congo has been allocated 70 000 doses of Merck's Ervebo vaccine for Ebola, the World Health Organization said on Thursday, as the country attempts to contain its biggest ever outbreak of the deadly disease. Last week Congo had requested a release of Ervebo vaccines from the global Ebola virus disease vaccine stockpile, managed by the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision, according to WHO. The health agency said the group allocated 70 000 Ervebo doses for Congo, of which 20 000 shots will be used in a late-stage trial to understand the impact of the vaccine on the Bundibugyo virus. The ongoing outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, which has no approved vaccines or treatments.

The AFC/M23 rebel alliance in Democratic Republic of Congo, which has highlighted its ability to tackle the spread of Ebola in territory it controls, has said it will impose new restrictions on people's movements to and from Ebola-affected government-held zones. Shared taxis on the road between Goma and Kirumba will be suspended for one month, starting from Saturday, as will pirogue boats carrying passengers on certain routes on Lake Edward, said the statement, issued late on Wednesday.
President Bola Tinubu's overhaul of Nigeria's economy, including scrapping a costly fuel subsidy and devaluing the currency, has helped to stabilise public finances, lift foreign reserves and attract investment, Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele said on Wednesday. Tinubu's 2023 reforms have won backing from investors and international lenders, but for ordinary Nigerians they have been painful, and at least in the short term have exacerbated a cost-of-living crisis. Oyedele said subsidy and foreign exchange reforms delivered 15.8-trillion naira in savings from June 2023 to December 2025. He also said they boosted total federal resources by 20.4-trillion naira through higher revenues and borrowing. The government used the funds to support 30.64-trillion naira in extra spending.
