Congo's Ebola outbreak has the largest number of confirmed cases within the first month of any episode of the disease, a senior World Health Organization official told a briefing on Tuesday, blaming the surge on its quick spread to urban areas. The Bundibugyo outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has infected over 1 000 people and killed 267 was detected late and experts say the virus had already been circulating for months before it was officially declared on May 15.

Libya, where control is split between rival western and eastern factions, has been a major transit route for people fleeing conflict and poverty towards Europe by the dangerous sea route since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising toppled Muammar Gaddafi.

Last month, Ali Rizkallah, a commander in the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group, was welcomed to Sudan’s capital Khartoum and given a uniform and a rank in the armed forces he had spent about three years fighting. The army-affiliated government hailed his defection — the latest in a series of high-level switches that have been reshaping Sudan's alliances and boosting the military in one of the deadliest conflicts of the century. But many others have balked at the sight of Rizkallah and other former RSF figures moving freely and holding press conferences, fearing that the defectors will evade justice for alleged crimes committed under their command. "These RSF soldiers, even if they seek God’s forgiveness, I can’t forgive them because of what I saw face to face," Halima Ismail, a woman in western Darfur, told Reuters.

President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted the critical need for African nations to establish self-reliance during health emergencies. Stressing that health security is deeply tied to economic development, Ramaphosa believes Africa can no longer afford to be at the “back of the global queue” for vital medical supplies, as witnessed during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. Writing in his weekly newsletter to the nation on Monday, Ramaphosa urged the continent to build the capacity to protect itself before the next global crisis strikes. He outlined a comprehensive strategy to fortify domestic health systems, emphasising that preparation cannot wait until an outbreak occurs.

Ebola has now infected more than 1 000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo in an outbreak that has spread to a third displacement camp and killed an 18-month-old girl, official reports showed. The confirmed death count stood at 254, Congo's government said late on Sunday, more than a month after the declaration of the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain that has no approved treatment or vaccine. The speed of its spread across three provinces of eastern Congo has prompted warnings from African health experts that the outbreak could eventually surpass the epidemic that killed more than 11 000 people across West Africa from 2014 to 2016. The girl was tested for Ebola on June 14 in the Hungbe displacement camp, and died before the positive result came back the next day, a Congolese health report seen by Reuters showed.
