The DA in the Western Cape thanks all individuals, community organisations and disaster management teams for helping those affected by recent storms in the Western Cape, especially in the Langeberg, Overberg and Garden Route areas.
These areas were most affected as infrastructure was severely damaged. Several road closures, due to floods and damaged infrastructure, left many residents and travellers stranded.
Civil organisations, local government and the private sector were quick to react and assist many travellers. Churches, community halls and parking lots were made readily available for travellers to safely stay overnight. Local traffic authorities were also on high alert, quickly implementing necessary road closures and directing traffic to safety. Western Cape Disaster Management Teams were also dispatched to ensure the safety of residents.
Mop-up operations are already underway and we will continue to monitor the situation.
Sadly, there are also reports of missing persons as well as loss of life, and we wish to send our heartfelt condolences to the affected families.
