Yesterday, the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Transport and Public Works met to deliberate on the amendments to the draft Western Cape Provincial Transport Infrastructure Bill.

This Bill seeks to address:

  • The management and approval of infrastructure-related operations;
  • Collaboration between the Provincial Government and municipalities to manage road and transportation infrastructure projects;
  • The designation of provincial public transportation infrastructure, such as high-quality public transportation roadways for BRT-style systems and passenger or freight rail networks; and
  • Creates a new legal framework that will enable the province to manage its provincial roadways, railway lines and other auxiliary infrastructure.

The DA in the Western Cape is in full support of the amended draft Transport Infrastructure Bill. The necessity and significance of shared responsibility in the administration and management of road and transport infrastructure were emphasised yesterday during the Standing Committee on Transport and Public Works.

MPP Ricardo Mackenzie says: “I am pleased with the amended draft Bill and trust that every member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament will support it entirely. The approval of this Bill will determine the direction of innovative transportation infrastructure in the Western Cape. This Bill is also the first of its kind in South Africa and upon its passing, the real and innovative work will begin. Over the coming weeks, the Provincial Parliament will publish further details for the public to explore the Bill’s critical details.”
