The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Durban, first of all, would like to express its full solidarity to the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Government of South Africa and its people, and wish them a sooner victory against the virus. We have been providing support and will continue doing so to our best.

We noted with deep regret the Statement by the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs of KZN. We were shocked at the arrest of a Chinese citizen working hard to help KZN in its fighting against the virus and require that his legitimate rights be fully guaranteed, the consular visit to him be arranged sooner, the case be thoroughly investigated prior to any conclusion in accordance with the South African laws and the international practice.

The Chinese Consulate always requires that all Chinese citizens and companies in KZN to abide by the South African laws and customs. At the same time, their legitimate rights and interests should be protected and ensured by the South African and local governments according to international law and bilateral agreements.

The Chinese community including the Chinese companies have been proactive in KZN’s economic and social development and has made great contributions. Tens of thousands of jobs have been created in Durban, Newcastle and other municipalities. In addition, they have been active in charity activities. In 2019, to the floods-stricken brothers and sisters in KZN, jointly with the Chinese community in the rest of South Africa, they made a donation of blankets, biscuits, boots and etc in total value of R 1.4 million. We have full confidence that they would contribute more along with the growth of their business.

It is learned that the referred factory located in Glen Anil Durban was specially set up to help KZN people’s fighting against the virus last week. The company, which has provided over 200 jobs in its other businesses across KZN and South Africa, commits itself to donating all facial masks to be manufactured in the factory during the lockdown period and none would be used for sale. The price hike in the Statement of MEC has nothing to do with this factory. So far it has already made donations to the KZN Government, the police service and some hospitals. More could be expected should the factory had not been closed down today.

The lockdown is a difficult time. For the interest of KZN people, all efforts of ours should be dedicated to fighting against the virus. It is hoped that the above mentioned case be handled and concluded properly and as soon as possible so that the factory as well as the whole Chinese community could concentrate its joint efforts with our KZN brothers and sisters on fighting against the virus.

A Friend in need is a friend indeed. Friends who have come to offer help to South Africans at this difficult time deserve due respect if not appreciation, should be well treated rather than disappointed, no matter they are from China or any other country.
