Johnny Clegg belonged to all progressive communities and its progressive peoples. His death is a painful reminder to us all that what is alive today will soon disappear. We will ensure that his memory does not die, and that he receives all the honour deserved by such a committed and gifted comrade.
Tonight, many of us are listening to The Crossing, one of Clegg’s most beautiful songs.
O Siyeza, o siyeza, sizofika webaba noma
(we are coming, we are coming, we will arrive soon)
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudla lomhlaba
(we are coming, we are coming, we are moving across this earth)
Siyawela ngaphesheya kulezontaba ezimnyama
(we are crossing over those dark mountains)
Lapho sobeka phansi konke ukuhlupheka
(where we will lay down our troubles)
Hamba kahle Qhawe!
Issued by Irvin Jim, National Chairperson of the SRWP
