The South African Municipal Worker's Union (SAMWU) in the Eastern Cape has noted with serious concern the recent killings of municipal workers, particularly those who are in the forefront of exposing the cancerous corruption in our municipalities.

Two municipal workers from Amatole District Municipality, Mr. Thandile Mbono and Mr. Simphiwe Mdingi died in flood of bullets in two separate instances with clear intentions to eliminate them. We send out our heartfelt condolences to the Mbono and Mdingi families.

We are convinced that looters of the already scarce resources in municipalities have resorted to procuring hitmen to eliminate anyone who seeks to blow the whistle on the rot that has engulfed our municipalities.

We call on law enforcement agencies to take serious reports of corruption in municipalities and further provide the necessary protection to whistle blowers so to ensure that municipal workers are not discouraged from reporting fraud and corruption which they witness or uncover in municipalities.

We further call on law enforcement agencies to ensure that they leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of perpetrators of these evil deeds which have now left families fatherless and widowed. We also want to know who hired them and for what purpose.

As SAMWU we commit to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure law take its course. We will fight against corruption,  and those on the wrong side of law must know that we are coming and will leave no stone unturned untill these scarge is over. They must know we are their enemies as we can not partner with corrupt individuals or groups whose intentions are nothing to to empty municipal coffers.

We once more sendout our heartfelt and sincere condolences to the Mdono and Mdingi families, their friends and colleagues. Phumlani ngoxolo madoda nalapha niyakhona nisicelele ukhuseleko

Issued by SAMWU Eastern Cape
