The South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC or the Commission) is deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of the Minister in the Presidency, Mr. Jackson Mthembu, at the young age of 62.

The Commission conveys its deepest condolences to Minister Mthembu’s family, friends and colleagues. He was a brave and unapologetic pillar of democracy. Not only has his family, friends and colleagues lost, but the country has also suffered a big loss with his passing away.

Born on the 5th June 1958 in Witbank, Nkangala District Municipality, he most recently served as the Minister in the Presidency of South Africa's government, and Member of Parliament in the National Assembly, on behalf of the African National Congress (ANC). Previously, he served as the Whip of Parliament for the ANC and as well as the National Spokesperson for the ANC.

In a statement confirming the passing of Minister Mthembu, President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that “Minister Mthembu was an exemplary leader, an activist and life-long champion of freedom and democracy. He was a much-loved and greatly respected colleague and comrade, whose passing leaves our nation at a loss.” We cannot agree more.

Minister Mthembu passed away due to COVID-19 complications. His passing serves as yet another stark example of the dangers of COVID-19, especially the second wave that is wreaking havoc throughout South Africa and beyond, claiming an untold number of lives by a pandemic, since 1918. We can all honour him by religiously observing the safety protocols of avoiding super spreader gatherings / events, maintaining the safe social distance, covering our noses and mouths with cloth masks or other suitable articles and frequently washing our hands with water and soap and observing the regulations and procedures that have been announced to help keep ourselves and others safe from this virulent virus.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Issued by the South African Human Rights Commission
