With the increase of violence in schools that affect the provisioning of quality public education, SADTU Free State has played a pivotal role in the convening of school safety summit by Free State Department of Education on 22 - 23 February 2019. The summit emerged with concrete resolutions, which resulted in the establishment of provincial steering committee to monitor implementation of these resolutions.
To take the process forward the union will utilise the International Games with Lesotho Association of Teachers to launch their campaign against violence in schools, on the 15 - 16 June 2019 in Bloemfontein. We regard sports as one of good strategies to combat crime and violence in schools and communities.
The launch of the campaign which the union refer to it as “I AM A SCHOOL FAN" intends to mobilise different stakeholders, teachers, learners, parents, Departments and community members at large to take stand against violence that is escalating in schools. Through “I am a school fan" campaign SADTU calls for the following:
- make our schools safe havens
- stop violence against teachers
- stop violence in schools & communities
