Education activist Hendrick Makaneta lambasted the Educators Union of South Africa for encouraging teachers to bring guns to school.

Makaneta said the call was not only reckless but was wrong to the core as the move would lead to disastrous consequences for the entire terrain of education.

"We condemn EUSA's call with the strongest possible terms." Makaneta said.

It is in times like these that as stakeholders we should jointly apply our minds and come up with sustainable solutions to the challenges that have a potential to damage the integrity of the education system.

Government must play a more active role to combat lawlessness in schools.

"We believe that we have found a solution to curb violence in schools and communities. All we need is a meeting with Police Minister Bheki Cele and Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga to present our solution." Makaneta added.

"I have met with a group of experts who are ready at any time to come and make presentations to both police and education ministers. The ball is now in the court of the two departments to give us a hearing."  Makaneta said.

It should be clear at this point that government has run out of solutions to eradicate the challenge of high levels of ill-discipline in schools.

Drugs and gangs are some of the basic tenets that can lead to ill-discipline in schools. It is high time that we take a radical stance to fight these scourges head.

We cannot allow kids to run the show. Enough is enough with acts of violence in schools and communities. We dare not fail.

Issued by education activist Hendrick Makaneta
