In December 2013, global law firm Hogan Lovells and Routledge Modise announced the combination of the two entities. The official launch event took place on 30 January in Sandton and introduced the rebranding of the firm to Hogan Lovells.

Attended by both international and local partners, the event highlighted the increasing importance for law firms with a global footprint to have a physical presence in Africa.

From the perspective of Hogan Lovells, this is evidenced particularly as the majority of the firm’s top 200 clients have operations on the continent. In addition South Africa is still regarded as the gateway into sub-Saharan Africa, with many companies basing their regional headquarters in Johannesburg.

“Both firms have proven track records, and this is a merger of expertise and knowledge to ensure that we continue to offer our clients the very best legal services. We have found that we share the same values and approach as Hogan Lovells – providing creative legal and business solutions for our clients with the highest professional standards. That won't change” said Lavery Modise, Chairman of Routledge Modise.

Commenting at the event Nicholas Cheffings, global Chair of Hogan Lovells said, “Africa is an extremely important market for our clients and to us as a firm. Its expanding economies and growing consumer base mean that a significant number of our clients have a rapidly increasing interest in the continent. We are delighted to be able to launch our office in South Africa with colleagues who are not only first class lawyers but who also share both our values and our ambition."
