Finance Minister Mboweni today called on the SANRAL board to reverse its decision to suspend collection of e-toll debts

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) says that the call by Finance Minister Tito Mbowenifor SANRAL to immediately reverse its decision to suspend e-toll debt collection is a sign of confusion in government over the e-tolling saga.

“This comment by the Finance Minister is a classic case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing,” says OUTA CEO Wayne Duvenage. “This shows a government that is suffering from a crisis of legitimacy which has an impact on investors and ratings agencies and the public.”

OUTA calls on SANRAL to make public a copy of  its board’s full resolution relating to this decision.

“While much is being said in the media about the resolution by SANRAL’s board, we need to study the document to understand the board’s position. In the interim, we urge motorists to remain vigilant and not to ignore SANRAL summonses,” says Duvenage.

“As we said when SANRAL announced this, we need the decision to toll Gauteng’s urban freeways rescinded before we can celebrate the end of e-tolls. Until then, this inter-governmental ping-pong on the e-tolls leaves us all confused and determined to fight this matter to the end.”
