Despite the country not having detected any cases of the Covid-19 disease which has crippled the global health community, various Malawian organisations are joining hands to prepare a national response.

Non-government organisation WaterAid and the Malawi Red Cross said they were joining forces with the government to ensure prevention and response services were in full operation.

Local newspaper Nyasa Times said WaterAid would help raise awareness of the disease and support efforts to improve sanitation and hygiene in public spaces and institutions.

WaterAid director Mercy Masoo -- whose organisation donated hygiene supplies to the Lilongwe city council -- urged the government to invest and focus more on infection prevention.

“In emergency situations like this one, WaterAid in Malawi believes in collaboration to achieve maximum results. Already we work closely with the government and this pandemic calls for concerted efforts," Nyasa Times quoted Masoo as saying.

The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) has launched a K25-million (nearly R613 000) mobile emergency operations centre (EOC) to be used for coordinating operations during disasters.

Online publication Malawi24 reported that funds for the unit were sourced from the Netherlands Red Cross Society.

“It will greatly assist the ministry and humanitarian stakeholders in coordinating various disaster response operations, since we cannot have EOCs in all the districts,” MRCS president Levision Changole said.

Changole said the disaster management affairs ministry would be implementing an early warning systems project which would construct two emergency operations centres, one in Zomba and the other one in Blantyre.

Meanwhile, Malawi announced that it would suspend all international flights from April 1.

The Civil Aviation Aeronautical Information Services said the suspension was in line with the declaration of a public health emergency of international  concern by the World Health Organization.

Schools and tertiary institutions have also been closed.
