The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] will convene a Special National Executive Committee on Saturday September 12, 2020 on the upcoming full-blown strike in all sectors we organise. 

The national union had a successful National Day of Action on the 3rd September 2020 and submitted memorandums of demands to the President of the Republic, National Speaker of the National Assembly and all Premiers except the Western Cape. The President was given seven days to respond positively and adequately to the demands made by our members and workers. 

Up to today, the President has not responded to these demands. In this regard, the national union is convening its Special National Executive Committee this coming Saturday, the 12th September 2020 to discuss the failure on the side of the President to respond to us and also map up a concrete way forward.

Post the Special NEC meeting, the national union will communicate its decision while branches of the national union across the country are directed to continue with lunch hour demonstrations to vent their anger at employers for their refusal to protect them against COVID-19 and the refusal to pay salary increases and bonuses. 

NEHAWU remains militant and resolute in defending its members and workers against employers who recklessly expose them to the coronavirus. The struggle for improved and safe working condition is more important more than ever and NEHAWU will wage a relentless war in fighting for the safety and health of its members and workers in their workplaces. 

The struggle to fight for the implementation of the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council [PSCBC] Resolution 1 of 2018 especially clause 3.3 will be intensified, including fighting for the implementation of all outstanding settlement agreements at Technical Vocational Education and Training [TVET] Colleges and Community Education and Training Colleges [CET Colleges] and at Social Development. 

An aggressive campaign will be undertaken against employers who are unilaterally suspending wage negotiations including the Amanzi Bargaining Council including employers who have elected to give our members and workers a 0% salary increase like the National Health Laboratories Service [NHLS].
