The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape is shocked at the dismal state of Victim Friendly Facilities (VFF's) in the province, especially since we are slowly losing the battle against gender-based violence (GBV).

Out of the 91 police stations in the province, Calvinia and Upington police stations have the most well equipped and functional VFF. Calvinia and Upington, however, are the exception. It was revealed this week that 17% of police stations in the province do not have designated victim friendly facilities fitted in their buildings. And of this 17%, a further 3,3% of police stations do not have a suitable office or space where they can provide victim friendly services such as interviewing victims or taking statements in private.

It is further worrisome to note that of the 83% of stations that do have adequate and reasonably acceptable space to provide victim friendly services, 23% are not functional, 41% are functional but not fully resourced and only 36% are functional and resourced.

Our province and victims are further doomed as 20% of the 36% functional and resourced VFF's cannot operate on a 24/7 basis. This means that, should a victim require support after specific stations have closed their doors for the day, they are in greater danger as they have no access to a safe haven to protect them from their attackers.

Given the scourge of gender-based violence in the country and the province, we need to be more conscious of the kinds of support offered to victims. Victims must not be let down, they deserve to be attended to and they deserve justice.

The DA will engage with the acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major-General Henriëtte de Waal, to determine the exact whereabouts of the non-compliant police stations and to prioritise putting measures in place to address the shortcomings in relation to VFF’s.

Urgent intervention is needed to ensure that the police service is capable and able to protect victims, therefore all 91 police stations should be fitted with a functional VFF.
