Namibia has recorded five South African-linked Covid-19 cases in the past week, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 21, local media reported on Monday.

According to a report in daily newspaper, The Namibian, a  47-year-old truck driver was confirmed positive on Sunday at Walvis Bay.

The man travelled from South Africa on May 8 and was quarantined at Walvis Bay truck port. He snuck into the community with another driver.

The duo was arrested by police and placed in supervised quarantine at the Walvis Bay Hospital isolation unit.

According to the newspaper, the men were fired by their employer for contravening quarantine regulations.

Another local newspaper, Informante, reported that urgent contact tracing by health officials was underway after it was determined that the truck driver spent the day with his family and friends in Walvis Bay.

Informante reported that nationwide lockdown measures were to be lifted as Namibia had gone for almost two months without any new infections, when suddenly the spike occurred.

The publication said that despite the spike, no new case were registered on Monday.

Last week's cases involved asymptomatic patients that were placed in supervised isolation.

"So far, 3 117 samples have been tested and the country currently has 597 people in quarantine while awaiting the results of tests that were performed," health minister, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula told the newspaper.

South Africa, which is preparing to enter level three of its Covid-19 lockdown by June 1, had registered 22 583 infections and 429 deaths by Sunday. Over 11 000 people had recovered from the virus.
