Mpumalanga Agriculture, has taken note of media reports containing allegations of maltreatment made at the Presidential Imbizo at Carolina. 

According to the report, these include claims about the theft of land, the confiscation of livestock, intimidation, as well as the failure of law enforcement agencies to respond to the situation. 

As a body representing the agricultural sector, Mpumalanga Agriculture view these allegations in a very serious light. Sustainable agricultural production is difficult and requires harmonious relationships between the various stakeholders. Abusive and extra-legal conduct have no place in the industry. We do not condone that which cannot be condoned! 

We would like to place on record that production units in the sector are subject to the law and undergo inspection, as is the case with any business. In addition, for many of our producers, access to markets depends on maintaining ethical business and labour standards. 

Mpumalanga Agriculture therefore support any investigation into the veracity of these claims and stand ready to assist in any way we can. 

We do, however, strongly caution against a rush to judgement until all the details have been confirmed. It is of the utmost importance that both public debate and any action be undertaken with regard to verified facts. 

It is of great concern to Mpumalanga Agriculture that abuses be rooted out. However, it is of equal importance that such allegations be properly scrutinised. Reckless and unjustified allegations and condemnations only makes constructive cooperation, to deal with common challenges in the sector, more difficult.
