As part of the Youth Month celebrations and in commemorating the life of struggle stalwart Archie Gumede, hundreds of youth and veterans will take to the streets to participate in the Archie Gumede Memorial Half Marathon and Fun Run in Clermont, Durban on Sunday, 28/06/15.
The Marathon is organised by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation in conjunction with KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) and the Archie Gumede Foundation and is part of the Archie Gumede Legacy Project led by the Office of the Premier.
The hosting of the Marathon is part of a Provincial initiative to honour Archie Gumede, who was an anti-apartheid activist, a lawyer and politician. He was the leader of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the 1980s and later became a member of the first democratic parliament. He died in 1998.
The 21.1km Half Marathon will start at Ntee High School in KwaNdengezi at 07h00 and finish at Clermont’s Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
The prize money totalling over R70 000 has been set aside for the top male and female finishers in different categories. The winners of both men and women’s races will get R10 000 each, second place get R6 000, R4 000 for third place with fourth and fifth walking away with R1000 and R500 respectively.
The 5km Fun Run/Walk will start and finish at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium from 08h00 and is expected to attract fun runners from local schools and communities from Clermont and surrounding areas. Top finishers in the Fun Run/Walk will receive t-shirts and medals.
The race will not only assist in preserving the legacy of Archie Gumede, but fits in with the Department’s objective of encouraging communities, especially the youth, to be active in sport and live healthy life styles.
Entries for the races are still open. Online entries will be available on the KZNA website, www.kznathletics.co.za. Online entries will close on 25 June 2015. Manual entries will be received at the KZNA offices at Kings Park Athletic Stadium until Saturday 27 June 2015.
