The IFP is shocked and saddened by a horrible accident involving a truck and a mini-bus travelling from Nongoma to Durban. The accident took place this morning on the R66 between Ulundi and uMthonjaneni in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The images of bodies, some burnt beyond recognition - and body parts - strewn across the wet and slippery road from the accident scene, are unbearably painful. It is for this reason that the IFP is pleading for caution on our roads. The 13 passengers who lost their lives in this truck-taxi collision are breadwinners and loved ones to many families.

We urge road users to adopt sober behaviour when they are behind the steering wheel, and to stop reckless driving. It is unfortunate that we continue to lose our loved ones in this fashion, particularly during Transport Month.

We urge road users to be patient and prioritise safety on our roads. We call for higher visibility of traffic officers, especially on our main provincial routes. This is the second incident in less than 10 days, as the province is still reeling from another horrific mini-bus accident, which claimed 13 lives from the Mhlanzi family in Bulwer, Kiliman, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

The IFP would like to convey its condolences to all families of the deceased during this time of bereavement. May they be comforted, knowing that they are in our prayers.

May their souls rest in peace.
