The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on Monday criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Economic Recovery and Reconstruction Plan, labelling it shallow and criticising it for omitting land expropriation.

Earlier this month Ramaphosa presented the plan, which he said would induce the private sector, pension funds and many others, to invest alongside government. He said this plan would unleash the capacity of the private sector to build jobs.

“The Central Command Team (CCT) reflected on Cyril Ramaphosa’s Economic Recovery and Reconstruction Plan and came to a correct conclusion that it is shallow and will not alter the structural deficiencies and racial inequalities that define South Africa's economic ownership and control,” said EFF leader Julius Malema.

He was addressing the media following the party’s third CCT meeting of the 2nd National People’s Assembly which took place between October 23 and 25.

Malema said the plan ignored ownership and control of strategic sectors of the economy.

“Without a fundamental change to the ownership and control of South Africa’s economy, it will continue to exclude and super-exploit the black majority and Africans in particular,” he averred.

The EFF would present a detailed and alternative economic recovery plan which Malema said will provide workable solutions.

Meanwhile, the party reiterated its call for the unsealing of the Ramaphosa’s election campaign documents, saying Ramaphosa’s secrecy was concerning as it was likely that the donors found within the documents were beneficiaries of tenders, appointments within the State and were in control of the policy perspectives of South Africa.

“This level of capture, in which Ramaphosa’s Presidency was bought, can only serve to further the white-minority control of our economy and the dictating of the economic direction of the country by an elite few,” Malema stated.

He said the party would take the issue to court.

The EFF was also preparing for the 2021 local government elections and said it was confident it would win a significant number of votes in different municipalities across the country.

The party has adopted a framework to guide it in the local elections which will be finalised when it holds its elections strategy workshop.

A policy perspective which synchronises local government elections and general elections was adopted by the CCT.
