Title: Dowry: W Cape approves funds for infrastructure projects in Brown's Farm

STATEMENT BY COBUS DOWRY, WESTERN CAPE MEC FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT: INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS OF R4 324 000 FOR BROWNS FARM

Local government is without doubt the sphere of government, which is in the frontlines in the battle against poverty. To capacitate and support local governments in the Western Cape in the fight against poverty, the Department of Local Government is coordinating the Municipal Infrastructure Programme (CMIP), a programme developed to support municipalities to provide for new infrastructure as well as the rehabilitation and upgrading of existing infrastructure.

In the current financial year R142, 4 million has been allocated to CMIP for infrastructure projects in the Western Cape aimed at providing at least basic levels of services to low income households. During the year 93 projects with a CMIP value of R107 million commenced whilst 95 projects with a CMIP value of R64 million were completed. CMIP has as purpose "Building Communities through the provision of infrastructure" and whilst achieving this, the programme created 225 313-person days of employment. In light of the above, the Western Cape has been acknowledged as one of the best performing provinces in the CMIP programme.

The Brown's Farm project is part of the Integrated Services Land Project which is a joint initiative of the Western Cape Provincial Government, the City of Cape Town and community organisations to plan and implement the construction of affordable housing on fully serviced even to meet the needs of approximately 4 200 low-income families.

I have now approved CMIP funding of two infrastructure projects in Brown's Farm. Towards the provision of Storm water pipelines, CMIP will contribute an amount of R2 339 200 and towards the construction of premix roads with kerbs and hardened sidewalks the CMIP programme will fund an amount of R1 984 800.

The Department of Local Government, through CMIP, will continue with the development and upgrading of infrastructure for communities in need. Not only will we build communities through the provision of infrastructure but also we will make them proud communities.
