Ramaphosa announces three Bills in the fight against gender-based violence

South Africa is on the cusp of the most far-reaching legislative overhaul in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide, according to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In his weekly address to the nation, he announced that three key Bills have been introduced to Parliament as part of government’s promise to GBV activists and women.

Ramaphosa said the three amendment Bills are designed to fill the gaps that allow some perpetrators of these crimes to evade justice and to give full effect to the rights of the country’s women and children.

Local Government Week kicks off

The South African Local Government Association and the National Council of Provinces are gearing up to celebrate NCOP’s 8th annual Local Government Week programme from Tuesday.

This year’s theme, ‘Ensuring Capable and Financially Sound Municipalities’ is aimed at mapping out interventions to change the current state of Local Government.

The keynote speaker of the week-long programme is Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma while Salga President Thembi Nkandimeng is scheduled to give an address on ‘Building A Coherent Approach to Addressing the Interlinked and Interdependent Challenges facing Local Government in South Africa’.

Clicks to keep stores open, despite EFF's shutdown threat

Health and beauty retailer, Clicks South Africa, says it will continue trading as normal on Monday, despite the Economic Freedom Fighter's call to shut down its stores nationally.

The retailer said it provides a much-needed healthcare service to South Africans and stores will not be closed.

This comes after the EFF issued a new directive on Sunday to "fighters and ground forces" to nationally shut down Clicks outlets in South Africa, after an offensive advert sparked outrage on Friday.
