South Africa moves to soothe investor fears over land grabs

As South Africa revises its legal framework to make it easier to take property without paying for it, the nation’s land minister has given assurances that the contentious process won’t degenerate into a free-for-all.

The ruling ANC decided in December 2017 to change the constitution to explicitly allow for expropriation without compensation.

Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Thoko Didiza said government has been engaging with investors to clarify why land reform is needed and emphasized that there won’t be wholesale gazetting of land for seizure and designated the courts to be the final arbiters in any disputes.

 

Parliamentary committee recommends Tsakani Maluleke as new Auditor-General

A South African Parliamentary committee on Tuesday recommended deputy Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke as the successor to incumbent Kimi Makwetu when steps down at the end of this term next month.

The ad hoc committee reached a unanimous decision that Maluleke, an experienced chartered accountant, was the best candidate put forward for the position.

The committee last month listed Maluleke among eight candidates shortlisted for the post, saying it had received 71 applications but the majority were from people with no accounting or auditing background.

 

Western Cape's Maynier wants Covid-19 travel 'red list' scrapped

The Western Cape government wants the coronavirus travel "red list" scrapped because it is killing international tourism.

Finance MEC David Maynier during a hybrid sitting of the Western Cape legislature said his is government was fighting hard to have this list scrapped.

It contains the list of countries South Africa considers at a higher risk for the coronavirus.

Germany and Canada were added to the list, which also includes India, the UK and the US.
