As the African continent celebrates Africa Day amid the global coronavirus pandemic, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledged that despite the resource challenges facing the continent, governments have been swift and proactive in implementing measures in the fight against the virus.

Ramaphosa said although the pandemic was not an African problem alone, the continent was determined to use its own capabilities and strengths to overcome it.

Ramaphosa also noted that the African response to the pandemic had received widespread praise.

Parliament commits to strengthen relations with other African Parliaments amid Africa Day celebrations

South Africa’s Parliament has committed to strengthen relations with other Parliaments in Africa to ensure a lasting solution to the challenges facing the continent, including the current coronavirus pandemic.

Africa Day is intended to honour and recognise the progress that the continent has made, whilst reflecting upon the common challenges that it faces in a global environment.

This year marks 57 years since the formation of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963, later succeeded by the African Union.

The date is being commemorated during this most challenging time of tackling the global outbreak of Covid-19.

Deported Ghanaians test negative for Covid-19

Ghanaian nationals deported from Kuwait have tested negative for the novel coronavirus, a government official confirmed.

Aviation Minister Joseph Kofi Adda confirmed that the deported individuals tested negative for the virus.

Adda said just over 200 Ghanaians were tested before leaving Kuwait, but health officials in Ghana will be performing their own independent testing to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
