SA's Covid-19 cases reach 12 739, death toll 238

The number of Covid-19 cases in South Africa now stands at 12 739 and the fatalities at 238, the ministry of health reported.

The ministry said another 19 people have died of complications related to the virus bringing the total national deaths to 238.

The Western Cape accounted for 56.8% of the confirmed infections, with 7 235. 

 

Covid-19 could exacerbate food insecurity, malnutrition in Africa – WHO

The World Health Organisation has expressed concern at the potential impact of the coronavirus on food security, which it says could worsen malnutrition in Africa.

WHO regional director for Africa Dr Matshidiso Moeti warns that the virus is threatening livelihoods and household economies while the continent grapples with hunger and undernourishment.  

As many as 73-million people in Africa are acutely food insecure. This is worsened by the restriction of food imports and agricultural activity, all owing to lockdown restrictions.

 

AfDB approves $13.7-million for Zim Covid-19 response

Zimbabwe will receive a $13.7-million grant from the African Development Bank to bolster its health system in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.

The grant will strengthen support for frontline responders and health personnel and boost the country’s Global Health Security Index.

The project will be carried out by the World Health Organisation and Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care will act as executing agency. The CRP is expected to directly benefit over 680 000 people.
