Winde wants Western Cape moved to Level 3 soon

Premier Alan Winde said he would "make clear" his provincial government's position that the Western Cape must move to Level 3 lockdown restrictions as soon as possible.

This is despite the province being home to 55.6% of the total positive Covid-19 cases in the country with 117 deaths.

President Cyril Ramaphosa was scheduled to visit the Western Cape on Friday, but this was postponed after Winde went into self-quarantine after coming into contact with eNCA cameraman Lungile Tom, who died of Covid-19 on Wednesday morning.

Motshekga will address nation on Monday on reopening of school

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will give a media briefing on Monday, May 18 to unpack discussions around the reopening of schools.

The Minister was meant to address the country today to provide details of the final dates and detailed plans for the phased approach to the possible reopening of schools.

Provinces have reported that they were at various stages of readiness and they requested more time as they waited for deliveries of personal protection equipment from the supplier.

Burundi expels national WHO head during election campaign

Burundi is expelling the national head of the World Health Organisation during a presidential election campaign where politicians have pressed ahead with large rallies despite the risk from the coronavirus pandemic.

The government confirmed that a May 12 letter from the foreign ministry was sent to WHO country head Walter Kazadi Mulombo and three aides ordering them out by Friday.

The vote for a successor to President Pierre Nkurunziza, whose government has been repeatedly accused of rights abuses and has previously expelled other representatives of international bodies, is due on May 20.
