SA's largest cigarette company drops proposed legal action against tobacco ban

British American Tobacco South Africa, the largest player in the country's cigarette market, says it will not be pursuing legal action in an attempt to force the state to permit the sale of cigarettes. 

At the start of May the company described government's decision to continue the ban on the sale of tobacco products under level 4 restrictions as "bizarre and irregular". 

Batsa said it has received a response to a letter sent at the end of April to the National Command Council, and was "convinced that by working together we can find a better solution that works for all South Africans.

 

Coronavirus deaths in SA rise to 148, while positive cases reach 7 572

The country has recorded an additional 10 deaths, bringing the number to 148. 

This, as confirmed cases rose to 7 572, up by 352.

The health department said 10 523 tests had been conducted in the past 24 hours, with total tests reaching 268 064. 

 

Zuma's fraud trial postponed

Former president Jacob Zuma's fraud and corruption case before the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg has been postponed to 23 June for allow for an inquiry into his failure to appear in court in February, according to the National Prosecuting Authority.

Zuma and French arms company Thales face 16 charges, including racketeering, fraud, corruption and money laundering.

The court issued a stayed warrant of arrest for the former president after he failed to appear for his hearing in February.
