Resort under lockdown ahead of arrival of repatriated group from Wuhan

Protea Hotel's Ranch Resort, outside Polokwane in Limpopo, is under lockdown after it was confirmed on Thursday as the quarantine site for South Africans being repatriated from Wuhan in China - the epicentre of the coronavirus.

The group is expected to arrive in South Africa today.

People in the area expressed mixed feelings about the group being so close to them, while staff at the hotel claimed they were not ready for the news that they would have the responsibility of seeing to those from Wuhan.

The site has been under the watchful eye of the military and police since Wednesday following threats to disrupt the government's plans by, among others, the African National Congress task team in the Capricorn District and the Economic Freedom Fighters.

DA to file court application to review dissolution of Tshwane council

South Africa's main opposition Democratic Alliance party today said it would file an urgent application later in the day to review the dissolution of the Tshwane municipal council.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura announced last week that the council had been dissolved and the municipality, home to South Africa's capital Pretoria, placed under administration until by-elections were held in 90 days to elect a new council.

The DA cried foul, saying Makhura's move was a cynical attempt to wrest control of the city from the official opposition and part of a wider plan to forge an alliance between his African National Congress and the Economic Freedom Fighters.

And, Court dismisses election appeal in Malawi

The Malawi Electoral Commission, or MEC, will appeal the Supreme Court of Appeal's dismissal of its application regarding last year's presidential election.

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the MEC’s application, in which the electoral body had sought the suspension of a judgment on the vote by the Constitutional Court.

The Constitutional Court in February nullified the 2019 election which returned President Peter Mutharika to power, citing widespread irregularities.

Fresh elections are expected to be held in May.
