No load-shedding expected on Tuesday, but possibility has increased

Load-shedding was not expected on Tuesday, but the possibility of rotational blackouts had increased owing to a high number of unplanned outages, Eskom said last night.

The utility said it was utilising emergency generation reserves to supplement supply.

The generation system remained constrained, vulnerable and unpredictable. Load-shedding could be implemented at short notice if there was a change in the generation system performance.

It said unplanned breakdowns or outages were at 13 297 MW at 3.40pm on Monday afternoon and planned maintenance outages were at 3 683 MW.

SA has no laboratory-confirmed case of coronavirus

South Africa has not had a laboratory-confirmed case of Covid-19, or coronavirus, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases said on Monday.

It stated that despite this, it had noted with concern the disturbing stigmatisation of people from affected areas, which included countries in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

Spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said that anyone who develops symptoms of respiratory illness, including cough, fever and shortness of breath, either during and after recent travel to countries where Covid-19 is known to be circulating must seek medical care early and share information about their travel history with healthcare providers.

Meanwhile the World Health Organisation said the number of cases in China continued to decline.

And, Steenhuisen to take 'charge' of DA's Tshwane conundrum ahead of crucial council sitting

The Democratic Alliance's national leaders, including interim leader John Steenhuisen, federal council chairperson Helen Zille and head of the governance unit James Selfe, will meet with its Tshwane caucus on Wednesday ahead of a sitting to elect a new leader for the city.

In a letter to the caucus, Steenhuisen expressed an understanding of the frustrations experienced by the party's councillors in Tshwane following last week's collapsed council sitting.

The sitting failed to elect a new mayor for Tshwane, which formed part of discussion among frustrated councillors, with some expressing dissatisfaction with the party's pick for mayor.

The capital city also runs the risk of being placed under administration, as its council has failed to pass its adjustment budget, which had to happen before the start of March.
