EFF to sue govt over Collins Khosa killing
Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema said his party was instituting a court challenge to ensure that the South African government paid compensation for the killing of Johannesburg man Collins Khosa, and others killed by armed forces and police during the country's Covid-19 lockdown.
Malema told a crowd of supporters protesting under the hashtag Black Lives Matter at the United States embassy in Pretoria.
Malema vowed that everyone that was hurt by the military during the nationwide lockdown imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus, would be compensated.
Covid-19 cases expected to hit 50 000 this week
President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned South Africans not to be alarmed by the rising number of coronavirus infections, saying the country can expect to hit 50 000 cases and 1 000 deaths during the course of this week.
The current number of Covid-19 cases in South Africa is 48 285 with 998 deaths.
Ramaphosa urged South Africans to be prepared for the rising infection rate and assured that the national lockdown was working to delay the spread of the virus and prepare health facilities.
Schools in Western Cape and Gauteng report cases of Covid-19
The Western Cape says 55 schools have been affected by cases of Covid-19 in the province, while 30 schools in Gauteng have reported cases.
A total of 11 Western Cape schools were closed on Friday due to Covid-19 concerns, but were expected to reopen on Monday.
In Gauteng, Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi confirmed on Sunday that 30 schools in the province reported cases of Covid-19.
