ANC urges Ramaphosa to engage US over racial police brutality

The ANC say it is concerned about the numerous incidents of police brutality in the US, particularly against African Americans and has called on President Cyril Rampahosa to engage with US authorities to diffuse tensions in the global economic powerhouse and to assist in building social cohesion among Americans.

The ANC called for calm across the US following days of riots, rampage and protests in numerous US cities following the May 25 murder of African American George Floyd by Minnesota police, which was captured on video.

ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe said it was deplorable that almost 70 years since racial segregation was abolished in America, people of colour are still routinely slaughtered for the colour of their skin.

South African rand falls as risk appetite wanes on US protests

The South African rand fell against the dollar in early trade on Tuesday, amid growing concerns over US-China tensions and rising violent protests across the United States.

Executive director at Peregrine Treasury Solutions in Pretoria said the rand is currently caught in range-bound trading.

She said as the riots in the US, the geopolitical environment, as well as the reopening of the economies unfold, they could potentially provide new clear direction for the local unit."

82 people have died of coronavirus in the Eastern Cape

A total of 82 people have died of the coronavirus in the Eastern Cape since the start of the outbreak.

This is according to a performance report submitted by its health department and presented to the province's Provincial Coronavirus Command Council.

The province currently has the third highest number of infections - 4 111 of the national total. The Western Cape has the most confirmed cases at 22 567 followed by Gauteng with 4 231.

According to the statistics presented to the council, headed by Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Mabuyane, more than 1.6-million people were screened for coronavirus, of which 56 628 people were tested.
