Police plan to arrest Zuma on Wednesday

Police Ministry spokesperson Lirandzu Themba has said South African police plan to arrest former President Jacob Zuma by midnight on Wednesday, in the absence of any further instruction from the Constitutional Court.

The nation’s top court last week sentenced Zuma to 15 months in jail for contempt of court and ordered that he surrender to the authorities by July 4, or face arrest within three days of that deadline.

Police Minister Bheki Cele sought clarity from the court about the arrest order after Zuma applied to a lower court to have it suspended.

The judgment on the application to stay the arrest will be handed down on July 9.

The 79 year old remains a powerful political player in South Africa, and his case has been a key test for the country’s democracy and its resolve to uphold the rule of law.

DA wants Ramaphosa to publicly release SIU report

The DA has asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to immediately release the full, unredacted Special Investigating Unit report on the Digital Vibes investigation.

The Presidency confirmed on Tuesday that it had received the SIU’s final report into the Department of Health irregularly awarding a R150-million contract to Digital Vibes, in 2019.

Digital Vibes is the communications firm apparently controlled by former aids of Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, who is on special leave pending the investigation.

The Presidency has promised to keep the public abreast after studying the report.

Kenneth Kaunda's burial begins despite court challenge

The burial of Zambia's founding president, Kenneth Kaunda, started on Wednesday despite a court challenge by one of his sons against his burial site.

Kaunda ruled Zambia from 1964, when the southern African nation won its independence from Britain, until his defeat in an election in 1991.

He died on June 17 in a military hospital in Lusaka.

Kaunda's son Kaweche on Tuesday challenged in court the government's plan to bury his father's remains at a presidential burial site, saying it was against the African statesman's wish.
