SA on a hard sell at World Economic Forum

South Africa is on a hard sell strategy at the World Economic Forum in Davos in Switzerland, eager to position itself as a primary emerging market allied to world-class infrastructure.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead a strong team to the 2019 WEF annual meeting as South Africa aims to ramp up international investment in a bid to overcome slow economic growth and despairing levels of unemployment.

Earlier this month the World Bank cut its 2019 projections for economic growth in SA from last year's estimate of 1.8% to 1.3% while the country itself has been absorbed by the corruption revelations emerging from the inquiry into State capture.

Mokonyane feels 'betrayed' by Zondo commission

Environmental Affairs Minister Nomvula Mokonyane says she has not been afforded the opportunity to make representations before the Zondo commission of inquiry into State capture.

This is after former Bosasa chief operations officer Angelo Agrizzi, who is currently testifying before the commission, claimed that she had been allegedly paid R50 000 a month for years to protect the company from law enforcement agencies.

In a letter dated January 21 Mokonyane's lawyers state that on January 16, an investigator from the commission advised them that she may be implicated by evidence given by Agrizzi and that Mokonyane was welcome to attend the proceedings in person or send a representative.

Jiba 'eager' to testify at the State capture commission

Suspended Deputy National Director for Public Prosecutions Nomgcobo Jiba says she is willing to appear before the Zondo commission of inquiry into allegations of Sate capture should she be given a chance to do so.

Jiba was placed on suspension last year by President Cyril Ramaphosa along with the special director of public prosecutions Lawrence Mrwebi.

During his testimony at the State capture commission last week former Bosasa chief operations officer Angelo Agrizzi testified that Jiba received at least R100 000 and Mrwebi R10 000 to kill an ongoing corruption probe by the National Prosecuting Authority and the Hawks.
