Kodwa and Mabe asked ANC if they could 'step aside' as spokespersons

The ANC secretary general Ace Magashule says it was Zizi Kodwa and Pule Mabe who each requested that they not fulfill their full responsibilities while they face separate claims of sexual violence.

On Tuesday morning, two national working committee members told a news agency that a decision had been taken for the pair to "step aside" from their roles as official spokespersons for the party.

On Saturday, ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte confirmed that a woman had sent a rape complaint against a high-ranking official to the office of the secretary general.

Nigeria's Buhari extends lead in election count as death toll mounts

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari extended his early election lead on Tuesday based on official results from a third of the country's districts as the death toll from sporadic election violence rose to 47.

Provisional results announced in state capitals but not yet confirmed by the commission showed Buhari on course to cementing a commanding lead over his main rival, former vice president Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku's party has rejected the tallies thus far as "incorrect and unacceptable".

No shortlist for SABC board as MPs squabble

What should have been a meeting of the oversight committee on communications to shortlist candidates for the South African Broadcasting Corporation's board on Tuesday degenerated into a heated standoff between MPs about whether they were rushing the process.

December saw the resignation of four members of the SABC board – former City Press editor Mathatha Tsedu, Krish Naidoo, Khanyisile Kweyama and John Mattison. This left the board unable to form a quorum.

The committee was meant to announce a shortlist of 24 candidates who will be interviewed to fill eight vacancies at the board.

However Economic Freedom Fighters MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said on Tuesday he found it unwise to rush the process of shortlisting candidates some 80 days before the May elections with MPs preoccupied with campaigning.
