Residents of Soweto in Gauteng took to the streets this morning in protest against days-long electricity cuts.

A handful of Soweto residents turned up to protest against electricity blackouts and billing problems in the area.

The leader of the Soweto Shutdown, Rufus Tshoke said protesters wanted the attention of Gauteng Premier David Makhura, who should acknowledge their challenges with Eskom.

Meanwhile Eskom said it does not expect to have to implement power cuts today after additional generation units returned to service overnight.

UN calls for 2020 Nelson Mandela Prize nominations

Nominations for the 2020 United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize close on February 28 and the UN is calling on final nominations to recognise outstanding individuals.

The prize is awarded every five years to two individuals – one female and one male.

The prize was established by the UN general assembly in June 2014 with the aim of recognising people whose achievements have been in the service of humanity, while adhering to UN principles and while honouring the life of former South African Statesman Nelson Mandela.

Prizes will be awarded at the United Nations headquarters, in New York, on Nelson Mandela International Day on July 18.

And, deadly coronavirus has not reached SA shores

The deadly coronavirus, or Covid-19 has not reached South Africa.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases said today that it remained on high alert for an imported case of Covid-19.

To date the virus has left more than 2 700 people dead in more than 80 000 reported cases.

There has been an increased number of cases reported in Italy and South Korea, as well as reports of cases and deaths in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

That’s a roundup of news making headlines today
