ANC says de Ruyter had legal obligation to report Eskom corruption to Hawks

The ANC has criticised former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter for his public accusation of unnamed ANC politicians of corruption at Eskom, and said he had a legal obligation to report the allegations to the Hawks.

De Ruyter resigned from the utility with immediate effect, after a board meeting on Wednesday.

The ANC says is it not befitting a senior official of a State-owned entity to make the kind of public utterances that De Ruyter did to a news agency.

It said he had a legal obligation in terms of Section 34 of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities [Act] to report to the Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation – better known as the Hawks.

The party called on De Ruyter to put his allegations to the appropriate forums for investigation and also urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to afford De Ruyter the protection of a whistleblower.

South Africa has been greylisted

South Africa has been greylisted by the Financial Action Task Force, an intergovernmental body that sets global standards to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

The move puts South Africa in the company of countries such as Syria, Haiti, Yemen and Mozambique.

The watchdog's decision signals to global banks, financial institutions and investors that the country is not fully compliant with anti-money laundering and terrorist financing standards.

However, it said that in recent months, South Africa has made significant progress on many of its recommended actions to improve its system.

KZN to appoint panel of energy experts to address energy crisis

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube said that her government will appoint a panel of energy experts by the end of March to coordinate and help accelerate the implementation of KZN’s Energy Master Plan.

During her State of the Province Address in Pietermaritzburg the Premier said her province is contributing to the national effort by establishing a KZN Energy War Room, comprising government and strategic partners to oversee the province’s response to the electricity crisis.

Dube-Ncube explained that the rollout of rooftop solar panels to households in the province, in line with the pronouncement by the Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana, will be accelerated.
