Mrwebi says Mokgoro inquiry unfair

Before going through cross examination at the Mokgoro inquiry, the suspended Special Director of Public Prosecutions Lawrence Mrwebi on Friday said he found the process highly unfair and felt like an accused.

It is alleged that Mrwebi acted improperly when he withdrew charges against former Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli in 2011.

Mrwebi said he was suspended based on an allegation made by an unidentified person that he was unfit to hold office.

The advocate said he found it difficult to prepare for the inquiry as he did not know what to expect and this posed as a dilemma to him.

South Africa's rand firms after Moody's hints at ratings reprieve

South Africa's rand strengthened against the dollar on Friday, putting it on track to end a week marked by the annual budget higher, after Moody's signalled the nation's spending plans didn't weaken its policy credibility.

Attention had turned to rating agencies' reaction to the budget, which included a bleaker outlook for economic growth and debt and a bailout for struggling State-run power firm Eskom, after concern it could prompt a downgrade.

On Thursday, Moody's, the last of the big three ratings agencies to maintain an investment grade on South Africa, said that the government's decision to raise its spending ceiling by R16-billion did not weaken fiscal policy credibility.

ANC apologises to Gordhan and Mchunu

The African National Congress has done an about-turn after issuing a statement criticising Pravin Gordhan and Senzo Mchunu for allegedly “attacking” black professionals.

It was alleged that Gordhan and Mchunu blamed "black professionals" for the dire situation that State-owned enterprise, Eskom, was in.

The ANC said after a thorough investigation on statements attributed to both Gordhan and Mchunu, it has established that their remarks were taken out of context.

The governing party said in a statement that it offered an “unreserved apology” to both ANC leaders.
