Opposition parties want Ramaphosa to step down

Opposition parties are calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to step down following the release of the Section 89 Report, which made damning findings against him relating to theft of money from his Phala Phala farm.

The report comes as Ramaphosa battles to keep his role as President in the African National Congress. The party will meet between December 16 and 20 to elect a new leader.

On Wednesday Retired Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo handed over the long-awaited report to National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, which found that Ramaphosa could have violated the Constitution and laws.

Economic Freedom Fighter leader Julius Malema said the report’s findings are tantamount to a betrayal of South Africa.

Democratic Alliance Chief Whip Siviwe Gwarube said this was a defining moment for the country’s constitutional democracy and must not be taken lightly.

United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa stated that there was no further need for Parliament to interrogate the matter given the recommendations of the panel. He said the balance of probabilities was sufficient that nothing more needs to be proved.

As pressure mounts, Ramaphosa tells allies he is not opposed to resigning

President Cyril Ramaphosa's closest allies are meeting at his Cape Town office, after he told his allies he was not opposed to resigning.

In the immediate aftermath of a Section 89 panel report, top party leaders have been frantically grappling with what it means for Ramaphosa.

He said he is ready to leave, a Cabinet minister said this morning.

Ramaphosa is said to have told those closest to him that the report by the panel, led by former chief justice Sandile Ngcobo, was flawed in law, but he is not expected to put up a fight at a looming African National Congress national executive committee meeting this evening.

And, Funding declarations by political parties surpass R60m in second quarter

Political party funding declarations surpassed R60-million in the second quarter of the 2022-'23 financial year.

The Democratic Alliance declared the highest amount with over R35-million.

ActionSA, a party not represented in Parliament or any provincial legislatures, came in second, declaring over  R17-million.

The African National Congress declared R7.5-million, while the Economic Freedom Fighters declared R150 000 in donations.

The R60-million declared donations were the highest quarterly reported donor disclosures since the Political Funding Act came into effect in April 2021.

The EFF, DA, ANC and ActionSA were the only political parties that declared donations to the Electoral Commission of South Africa in the second quarter of the 2022-'23 financial year.
