Ramaphosa reprimands Mboweni for rebuking Zambian President

President Cyril Ramaphosa has moved to allay concerns from Zambia following Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s recent tweet, which criticised Zambian President Edgar Lungu for firing the country’s central bank governor.

On Sunday, Mboweni tweeted that presidents in Africa must stop firing Central Bank Governors and demanded that President of Zambia must give reasons for the dismissal.

Ramaphosa, on Monday, reprimanded Mboweni and gave assurances to Zambia that Mboweni’s comments were not a reflection of the views of the South African government or South Africans.

Mkhize says South Africa is over the surge, but warns of resurgence

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says South Africa is "over the surge" of coronavirus infections, but warns that a resurgence might be on the cards if people neglect precautionary measures.

Mkhize released the latest coronavirus statistics and numbers late on Sunday.

A cumulative total of 609 773 confirmed Covid-19 cases have been recorded in South Africa.

A further 72 Covid-19-related fatalities have been recorded. This brings the total Covid-19-related deaths to 13 059.

The recoveries now stand at 506 470, which translates to a recovery rate of 83%. This is well above the global average of 64.5%.

BLSA’s Mavuso says fight against corruption is ‘real and growing’

The fight against corruption is “real and growing”, says Business Leadership South Africa CEO Busi Mavuso, who adds that President Cyril Ramapahosa’s swift action on the coronavirus-related corruption with the appointment of a multidisciplinary centre to tackle the matter is “an important and appropriate step”.

She laments though that South Africa’s criminal justice system “has been frustrated” by schisms between different agencies like the police and the National Prosecuting Agency, as well as sources of intelligence and investigations like the Financial Intelligence Centre and the South African Revenue Services.

Mavuso is hopeful that with nine agencies working together to deal with Covid-19 corruption, we may well see swift justice.
