Ramaphosa warns of increased risk as country moves to level 2 lockdown

President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned of increased risk transmission of the coronavirus following his weekend announcement that the country will move to level 2 of the national lockdown from Monday.

In his weekly column to the nation, he reminded South Africans to manage the risk of infection and ensure that progress to contain the spread of the virus are not reversed.

He warned of complacency and said while South Africans were now permitted to visit friends and family, entertainment venues, travel for leisure and to consume alcohol in restaurants, bars and taverns, they should be vigilant.

Under level 2 of the national lockdown, masks are still mandatory in public.

DA welcomes reinstating of charges against Nomgcobo Jiba

The decision to reinstate perjury charges against former acting National Director of Public Prosecutions Nomgcobo Jiba for lying under oath is welcome but long overdue, the DA has said.

DA shadow minister of justice and correctional services Glynnis Breytenbach said it was in the interests of justice and accountability to prosecute Jiba for her total disregard for the rule of law, and her gross abuse of power while occupying that position.

Jiba was supposed to have gone to trial in 2015 for allegedly lying under oath in the former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Johan Booysen matter.

Ramaphosa to stop showering frontline workers with empty words over PPEs

President Cyril Ramaphosa's speech on Saturday evening did not speak to the urgent need to procure more personal protective equipment for frontline workers, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union says.

Nehawu's general-secretary Zola Saphetha was reacting to the announcement by Ramaphosa that the country would be moving to Level 2 of the lockdown on Tuesday.

The union said it is encouraging that the recovery rate has risen to above 80% and new infections are decreasing, but was hoping that the announcement did not breed complacency.
