Ramaphosa says State capture era is over but corruption not defeated

President Cyril Ramaphosa said that while the era of State capture is over, corruption has still not been defeated, with fraud and corruption pervasive and deeply entrenched in the public and private sectors.

Last week marked the end of the scheduled hearings of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, more than 1 000 days after the first witness testimony was heard.

Ramaphosa spent two days at the commission last week, giving testimony to Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

Ramaphosa said corrupt activities cost the country greatly, weakened the country’s institutions and deprived South Africans of many basic needs.

Jacob Zuma undergoes surgery

Jailed former president Jacob Zuma has undergone unspecified surgery and remains in hospital with more operations planned, prison authorities said.

Zuma, serving a 15-month sentence in Estcourt prison for contempt of court, was sent to a hospital outside for observation on August 6, days before the start of a corruption trial he has so far avoided.

There was no word on a potential discharge date for Zuma, who in July asked the country's top court to reverse his incarceration, saying it was unjust and might kill him if he catches Covid-19.

And, Zambia opposition leader Hichilema wins landslide in presidential election

Opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema secured a stunning landslide victory over incumbent Edgar Lungu in Zambia's presidential election, results showed on Monday.

The electoral commission said Hichilema got more than 2-million votes against Lungu's more than 1.8-million, with all but one of the 156 constituencies counted.

This would make the third time that power has shifted peacefully from a ruling party to the opposition since the southern African country's independence from Britain in 1964.
