The DA has written to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to probe the unaccounted R1.1717 billion of unauthorised expenditure incurred over the past 3 financial years in Mogalakwena Municipality.

The above was highlighted in the Auditor General’s (AG) report that also emphasizes the fact that the municipality incurred the second highest unauthorised expenditure nationally.

The DA has already requested MEC for Treasury, Seaparo Sekoati to establish a task team to probe the financial affairs of the municipality whilst putting measures in place to recoup the wasted money.

In the 2017-2018 financial year alone, the municipality incurred R373.7 million in irregular expenditure, R1.1174 billion in unauthorised expenditure and R2.6 million in fruitless expenditure.

The DA urges Dlamini-Zuma to establish the necessary investigations in an attempt to hold the implicated officials and politicians accountable.

The DA believes that those who are guilty of corruption must be sentenced to a minimum of 15 years. It is high time that those responsible for stealing money meant for the poor in Mogalakwena are put behind bars.
