South Africa recorded 245 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday and 35 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 89 387.
According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Tuesday, the country recorded 2 924 317 laboratory-confirmed cases.
"The NICD… reports that 245 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 0.9% positivity rate," the NICD statement read.
According to the Department of Health, 23 402 284 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 126 231 were administered in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. To date, 13 030 428 adults are fully vaccinated.
As of Tuesday, Gauteng recorded 920 191 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 516 005 and the Western Cape 513 995.
NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said the majority of new cases on Tuesday were from Gauteng with 35%, followed by the Western Cape with 16%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 15%; the Free State 13%; Mpumalanga 6%; the Northern Cape 5% and North West 4%. The Eastern Cape and Limpopo each accounted for 3% of new cases.
Gauteng recorded 85 new cases on Tuesday, the Western Cape 38 and KwaZulu-Natal 37.
There were 34 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Tuesday, 3 735 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.
South Africa has conducted 18 768 665 cumulative tests, of which 27 835 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.
